Curly hair is a unique and beautiful thing. I’ve loved cutting curly hair since I started my hairstylist career back in 1994. At the time, I had curly hair myself (A huge head of “Rocker” hair actually… my nickname in high school was “Bonjoey”). My hair was a huge part of my image and was very important. One thing I knew then that I have learned a lot about since those glory days is that color in curly hair just works differently than in straight hair. Curly hair “grabs” color more quickly meaning if you put a medium brown hair color formula on, you better watch your timing or you may end up so dark it’ll look black in the wrong light. Similarly with curly hair highlights, if the hair is foiled with subtle blended pieces in a manner appropriate for straight hair you can end up in trouble. Going that blended and subtle on curly hair can end up melding together so much that you end up with what looks more like an all over hair color rather than the distinctive multi layered highlights you were after.
