I have been doing hair for over thirty years. Most stylists are decent. Some are quite good, maybe even great.
But I’ve only met a few true Transformationalists.
Here’s what I mean by that.
When a rookie or even a talented stylist tries a huge color change, things can go sideways fast. We never want to say no. We don’t want to seem unsure about color. We hate losing your confidence or letting you down.
So what do we do? We fudge.
We say, “Yeah, we can do that. It might take some time, but going from black to blonde? No problem. I got you.”
Then we go into the color room and as the pressure builds we find ourselves thinking, “What the heck am I doing here?” Hair swatches and chemical color charts become panic tools. We call in others for help. “Go take a peek at the client in my chair. Her hair is really dark and she wants soft shimmery platinum. She booked a basic highlight but this is a corrective color. I don’t know if I can get this done in three hours.”
Then we wing it. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes your hair ends up orange or greenish brown. Sometimes you come back the next day for fixes. Sometimes your hair gets damaged.
A Transformationalist works differently.
Our in-house Transformationalist is Alexander Antonio. He starts with a free half hour consultation. He gets to know you, your budget, your hair, your challenges, and what you actually want. Then he lays out the pathways and possibilities. He talks about the hair journey and prepares you for what it entails.
Once everything is clear, he estimates time and budget and books your transformation day.
When he starts, he doesn’t stop until you love your hair. I have seen him power through eight hour sessions without breaking a sweat. He knows where he is going and has the tools, talent, and tenacity to get you there.
If you like your highlights as they are, if you know your color and have your style dialed in, stick with your stylist. They’re probably doing a great job.
But if you are going for something big, if you find yourself scrolling through social media for the perfect picture of your dream hair, or if you have been let down by stylists guessing with your big change, it might be time to build your budget.
We bill $100 per hour for this level of work. Plan for at least three hours. Gather your inspiration pictures. Set aside the time. Come see someone who can actually make it happen.
