I started Hair By Joey Prescott back in 2019 by myself with around 150 clients.
Since that time, we have grown to become one of the busiest hair salons in Prescott, Arizona. Currently we have twelve A-list stylists from all over the United States, four top students out of the local beauty school, and around five thousand regular clients.
As I have met an increasing number of guests from places like Phoenix, Flagstaff, Chino Valley, Prescott Valley, Bagdad, Cottonwood, Sedona, and Dewey-Humboldt who drive in to get their hair done with us, I have been struck by how far people will drive for the right stylist.
How do you decide if it is worth the drive?
That is the question. The answer will vary from person to person, but here are a few rules of thumb.
When The Drive Is Absolutely Worth It
If you are ready for a big change, it is not unreasonable in my opinion to drive as much as two hours to get a stylist who really knows what they are doing.
Highlights, balayage, women’s haircuts, men’s haircuts—they can vary a lot. But here is one thing they all have in common. If they are executed by someone who does not know what they are doing, they are going to end up costing you more in the long run.
Think about it this way.
You would drive to your doctor. You would drive to your dentist. You would drive to catch your favorite band or movie at a big venue. You are not going to play around with important things. Why should it be any different with your hair?
I often say, “Your hair is the hat you wear every day.”
With an average time between services running roughly six to eight weeks, does it not make sense to drive if it means never having to settle for a haircut you do not love?
Making a drive to a wonderful town gets you out of your routine. It puts you in a new place with a new head space. If you are making a big change or maintaining a complex hairstyle, make the drive.
When Staying Local Makes Perfect Sense
If on the other hand you are simply maintaining a simple style, touching up your roots with a straightforward color, or if you are just not a very picky person when it comes to that hat on your head, local may make a lot more sense.
Every town, however small, has a little beauty shop that can manage the basics. These folks need to make a living too. If what you need is easy, keeping it close to home makes a lot of sense.
Even small town stylists care. If they do not nail it right off the bat, they can usually figure your look out within a few visits.
