"If students, parents and staff loved Mountain Oak as mothers love children, arbitrarily, because it is theirs, Mountain Oak in a year or two might be fairer than Florence. Some readers will say that this is mere fantasy. I answer that this is the actual history of mankind. This, as a fact, is how schools did grow great. People first paid honour to a spot and afterwards gained glory for it. People did not love Rome because she was great. She was great because they had loved her.”
From G.K. Chestertons Orthodoxy (slightly modified)
Mountain Oak (https://mountainoakschool.org/) is a super cool, funky Waldorf school (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waldorf_education). We had the kids going there back in the day and then Covid hit and we homeschooled for a while but we’re back and boy are we excited! Waldorf in general and Mountain Oak in particular puts an extra emphasis on helping children learn and grow through interacting with the natural world. Mountain Oak has been blessed with a large parcel of land just begging to be cultivated and beautified. Through outdoor education right on the school grounds, our kids are learning how to landscape, how to fertilize, how to irrigate, how to create health and beauty in harmony with the natural environment and how to grow sustainable, healthy food of their own.
Sadly, Covid really clobbered MO’s student population. Don’t freak out no one died! It’s just that Waldorf parents tend to be independent free spirit people and so when things fell apart, many decided to just stick with homeschool or try other things. This has left this scrappy little school with about a third of the students, parents and staff they had when we were here 17-19. As a result, I’ll just be honest… the grounds have gone to seed.
Well when I went to a parent/staff get together in January I met the teacher they hired to try to whip things back into shape… Ms. Victoria. We got talking and the next thing you know I’d caught a vision…
What if my salon and even a tiny portion of our 3000 or so clients decided we wanted to make Mountain Oak beautiful for these kids? What could a bunch of us do in 3 hours once a month? So we did a test run at the end of January and let me tell you it was amazing! I haven’t had this much fun since Covid blew the world up. We ended up having 42 volunteers from just friends and family show up and we got a TON DONE! (check out the before and afters) It got us super stoked thinking about what we could do if more joined us in our quest to make Mountain Oak amazing!
So we’re doing it. Our next adventure in beauty building horticulture will be…
Saturday February 26th from 9-Noon
The coffee, bagels and donuts will be on point, the energy will be hype, and the opportunities for fun, connection and community will be abundant. Please consider rolling up your sleeves, packing up your gardening tools and joining us in creating something amazing!!!
